The opening match of the 2022 World Cup has been brought forward by one day
The opening match of the 2022 World Cup has been brought forward one day. FIFA has decided to do this because of the fireworks show after the first game of host country Qatar.
Originally, the opening game was to be played by the Netherlands and Senegal on Monday, November 21. Host country Qatar would play the first game that Monday evening and close it with a large fireworks show.
Traditionally, opening matches of World Cups are kicked off by the host country, but this edition Qatar would only play in the evening when it starts to get dark. In order to maintain the tradition, FIFA has decided to play the Qatar - Ecuador match a day earlier on Sunday 20 November.
