Procedure of the draw for the 2022 World Cup

The procedure for the draw for the 2022 World Cup is as follows. []

The 4 pots for the countries are numbered 1 to 4. Each pot contains 8 balls with the names of the 8 teams or place holders for the teams that are not yet known.

The 8 pots for the groups are labeled A through H. Each pot contains 4 balls numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 for position in that group.

The draw starts with country pot 1 and ends with country pot 4. Each pot is empty before moving on to the next pot.

A ball is drawn from the team pot, followed by a ball from one of the group pots. This places a team in a certain position in the group.

    Restrictions on the draw

There are also some restrictions on the draw for the World Championship.

In pot 1, Qatar's ball has a different color, because the host country is automatically assigned to position A1.

The remaining 7 teams from pot 1 are automatically drawn in position 1 of the remaining groups B to H.

Basically one wants to make sure that no group has more than one team from the same continent. The exception to this is Europe with 13 teams. Each group must have at least 1, but no more than 2 European teams. So 5 groups contain 2 European teams.
