Qatar is on schedule with another 1000 days until the 2022 World Cup
In exactly 1,000 days, the world will come together again for the biggest football show in the world - in the most unique setting to date. The compact nature of the first World Football Championship in the Middle East and the Arab world ensures that football fans from all 32 participating countries are always within a short distance of the eight stadiums.
Although the long-awaited tournament still seems far away, 136 of the 900 qualifiers have already been played. Two stadiums are fully operational in the capital Doha: Khalifa International and Al Janoub. Three more locations, Education City, Al Rayyan and Al Bayt, will be opened this year and the remaining three will be ready well in advance of the tournament.
Brand new metro lines have also been delivered that successfully have over 50,000 fans transported three games during the 2019 World Cup in Qatar. New roads and training locations will be completed, the airport will be expanded and permanent and temporary accommodations will be delivered.
" With 1,000 days to go, Qatar stands where no other host has been before. Qatar wants to astonish the world and is on the right track to achieving this, "said FIFA President Gianni Infantino. " The 2022 World Cup will be a breakthrough from a social and cultural perspective. It opens the doors of this crazy football region, offers a new perspective for locals and foreigners, brings people together and serves as a tool for common understanding. "
When it comes to preparing for the tournament, Qatar and FIFA learned lessons from the World Championship for club teams, which was held in December last year in the host country. Later, in 2020, the same tournament is coming to the country again. 50,000 international fans visited the country and the official fanzone welcomed 43,000 visitors.
