FIFA discusses the possibility of a 2022 World Cup in the winter
As part of an ongoing process towards the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the FIFA executive committee meets regularly to discuss the international competition calendar. On November 3, 2014 it was that time again in Zurich. It is discussed how qualifying matches fit into the schedule of other international tournaments. It is also discussed in which season the World Cup will be played in 2022.
The meeting was opened by FIFA chairman Blatter, while Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa of the executive committee is chairman today. This meeting follows the first meeting on 8 September 2014, where interested parties received information to study the international football calendar for the 2018-2014 period. A special point of attention is the period in which the World Cup will be played in 2022, due to, among other things, the warm climate in the summer and Ramadan.
It is proposed to hold the World Football Championship in January / February 2022 or November / December 2022. In the usual months of June / July it is too hot to play football.
The interested parties have studied how the above-mentioned alternatives fit into their football calendar. In addition, April / May 2022 and May / June 2022 were proposed as alternatives.
Professor Dvorak of FIFA's medical department reported on the medical conditions of footballers and football fans in the event of the 2022 World Cup between May and September. Jerome Valcke, General Secretary of FIFA, indicated that Ramadan will start on April 2, 2022. Of course, this will affect the performance of football players.
Hassan Al Thawadi again underlined that the ideal situation for the Middle East is to hold the soccer World Cup in the winter period. During the World Cup allocation to Qatar, he promised to respect FIFA's will.
At the end of the meeting, it was decided that two alternative periods would remain open: January / February 2022 or November / December 2022 Early 2015 more will be announced at the next meeting towards the World Championship in Qatar.
